Resources We Like and Support
The Horse Protection Society of North Carolina offers information to help you and your horse. Do you know how to determine the right size horse for you? I didn't. Check out their Education Barn to see how the folks at HPS care for their arthritic and Cushing's Syndrome charges. There are always new challenges for the volunteers at HPS, and their website shares their learnings with you. A national program sponsored by HPS is the Stallion To Gelding Support, whose goal is to encourage the public to geld their breeding stallions by offering free gelding services to those who no longer wish to breed their males. If the number of poorly-bred horses can be reduced, the need for horse sanctuaries may decline - a worthy effort.
Another non-profit dedicated to helping horses is Dream Equine Therapy Center located in York, SC. The facility rescues adult horses and is also dedicated to saving nurse-mare foals and finding adoptive homes for them. These are the brand new babies who are taken from their moms so that newborn thoroughbreds, also taken from THEIR moms so the moms can be bred again, can be raised by a nursemaid mare. So while HPS (above) is working to end unwanted babies through the Stallion to Gelding Support program, DETC is trying to save as many unregistered foals, created so their moms will have milk, as possible. We commend the directors and volunteers of both of these facilities for their tireless efforts on behalf of horses! Read the full story at this link: Terri Stemper in Today's Charlotte Woman
Misty Meadows Mitey Riders is a NARHA-premier center providing equine-assisted therapy for youngsters with special needs. The horses that work with the children have all gone through special training to become comfortable with situations and experiences that are not typical for horses in the wild. They will stand patiently while a student is transferred from a wheelchair to the saddle; they will accept an unbalanced rider and people walking alongside while they are being led by a third person. Pretty good for claustrophobic animals!
Safe Horse Training is the home of Joyce Lewis, a natural horsewoman who will help you and your horse develop a partnership where you both can thrive. She travels throughout the Charlotte NC and Union County (and surrounding) areas holding clinics, working one on one with you, and leaves in her wake calmer horses and horse owners. Her Cowboy Clinics are fun learning experiences for you and your horse.
Triple Play Farm is a PATH International and EAGALA-certified therapeutic center that provides Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) for individuals and groups. In using the horse as healer, their main focus in on equine facilitated psychotherapy sessions as an alternative to traditional talk therapy. In using the horse as teacher, they offer individual and group sessions focused on personal and organizational growth. They also offer monthly sessions for you and your equine partner to learn/grow your skills in natural horsemanship. Step out of your vehicle at Triple Play Farm in Davidson, NC, and you will immediately sense a feeling of calm.
White Dogwood Farm in the New Salem NC area is a full service boarding and Rocky Mountain breeding facility. With a beautiful barn with large airy stalls and a large arena for riding, this hidden gem offers horses a low-stress environment and high quality care. If you have a horse on lay-up, this place is for you. The care is superb, the facilities comfortable (for horse AND owner), and the people are terrific. Plus your horse will be on the finest nutritional program around.
Equine Nutrition and Research Geek Susan Evans Garlinghouse, DVM, MSc, has a website chock full of interesting articles on topics such as tying up, how to "read" CBC results, beet pulp and more. Found her site while doing a search on equine nutrition. She covers some topics I have not seen elsewhere.
For the equine art connoisseur, check out Anita Gersch's website. Every piece has a story that the artist shares, explaining how she came to paint the picture. Her knowledge of horses and riders shows in each magnificent portrait or study.
